Geotechnical and Contamination Investigations

Following a Phase I Desk Study and on producing a Conceptual Site Model it may be necessary to undertake an intrusive Phase II Investigation.

A Phase II Investigation can take many forms from simple sample collection to detailed intrusive investigations.  Contamination Investigations are often completed for development sites which require compliance with planning conditions relating to contaminated land issues.  For potential site acquisition/investment, the Phase II investigation provides a degree of assurance about potential soil and groundwater contamination issues to allow detailed risk and liability assessment to be undertaken.

We have experience of many types of former industrial sites including tanneries, petrol filling stations, breweries, vehicle repair garages, plating works and engineering workshops.

We can provide the following services:

  • Site investigation strategies
  • Attendance on site to complete intrusive investigations
  • In situ soil sampling
  • Groundwater / surface water sampling.
  • Scheduling laboratory testing
  • Tier 1 & Tier 2 Human Health Risk Assessment Reports.
  • Controlled water Risk Assessment
  • Preparation of factual and interpretive reports
  • Liaison with Environment Agency and Local Authority Contaminated Land Officers

Following a contamination investigation ACS will be able to provide you with details of remedial requirements that may be needed for the site.  Our experienced Geo-Environmental Engineers will be able to produce a Remediation Method Statement for your site to outline what is necessary.  Following this, we also are capable of producing a Validation Report.  Validation Reports are typically the final step in a contaminated land investigation and will prepared to discharge a contaminated land planning condition.

Geotechnical Investigations

As well as contamination investigations, ACS also offer an extensive range of investigation techniques to provide the required geotechnical parameters for any development.  The selection of investigatory method will often depend on site access, local geology and can often be carried out in buildings and factories and limited headroom situations.

Services we offer include:

  • Concrete / Rock coring
  • Trial pits – In-situ Testing and hand shear vane
  • Window / Windowless sampling using In-house Dando Terrier MK2
  • Heavy and Super Heavy Dynamic Probing
  • Hand held Window sampling equipment for sites with limited access e.g. railway embankments
  • Shell and Auger, Rotary and Sonic drilling techniques (through our trusted sub-contractors)
  • Assessment of ground conditions and potential foundation solutions
  • Soakaway testing and design – perforated rings, infiltration boxes and trenches.
  • Assessment of material re-use and earthworks options in collaboration with laboratory testing for DD/OMC, MCV and site testing
  • In-Situ CBR / Plate Bearing / Nuclear Density tests.
  • Investigation of structural defects e.g. railway abutments, retaining walls and floor slabs.
  • Piling mat design for granular or cohesive sub-grades
  • Engineering Logs prepared in HoleBASE for pdf or AGS data format issue.
  • Factual and Interpretive reports.

Both our contamination and geotechnical investigations utilise the ACS Group of Companies services with our UKAS accredited Testing and Environmental Laboratories, allowing us to provide you with a streamlined investigation from start to end.
