Desk Studies – Phase 1

Our team of dedicated Geo-Environmental and Geotechnical Engineers are experienced in carrying out high quality Phase I Desk Studies.  A Phase I Desk Study assessment is carried out at the start of the development project. Desk Studies are an essential element of the site assessment, as they allow for future stages of the investigation to be comprehensively and economically designed for your site. Desk Study Reports can either be completed in order to assist with the discharge of a contaminated land planning condition or to allow due-diligence report to be undertaken to assist the sale of a site.

Desk studies typically include the information below:

  • Historical map review
  • Environmental data reports
  • Geological appraisal
  • Hydrology and Hydrogeology
  • Local Authority records e.g. planning, Environmental health and building control.
  • County Council records e.g. Petroleum Officer, Archaeology.
  • Obtaining information and data from: Environment Agency, Natural England and Statutory Utility Companies (i.e. water and electricity)
  • Historical aerial photographs
  • Site walkover survey

After compiling the information gathered from the sources outlined above the key element of the desk study is produced, the Conceptual Site Model (CSM).  The CSM identifies pollutant sources and linkages relating to the site history, current site use and surrounding land use.  Receptors that may be adversely affected by these sources can then be suitably risk assessed which will allow a unique and tailored site investigation to be designed for your site.

If you have a project which requires a Desk Study or are unsure on the next stage to your project, Contact us on 01202 622858 and our Geo Consultancy team will be happy to help.
