ACS Environmental Testing offer an efficient and reliable WAC testing service. We use various test leaching procedures specified by the Environment Agency (BS EN 12457-2:2002, BS EN 12457-3:2002).
The leachate produced is analysed in accordance with strict procedures. The results from some of these tests can then be assessed in accordance with Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC). This helps to determine the appropriate class of landfill to accept the waste.
The Landfill Directive (2010) says we must know everything about waste before sending it to a landfill. The introduction of the Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC) ensures greater control of the waste disposed of at landfills. The focus is to minimise the impact of this form of disposal.
Why WAC Testing?
Landfill is the most cost-effective disposal route for waste.
WAC testing protects your consumers from contamination while enabling you to meet strict regulatory standards, enhance your company’s reputation, and save costs.
If waste doesn't meet the WAC criteria, it can be processed to reduce the costs of disposing hazardous waste.

Types of WAC Tests
WAC tests come in three different types:
- Inert (usually required)
- Hazardous - Stable non-reactive
- Hazardous
It’s important to note that a WAC test does not determine the hazardous properties of a specific matrix. It’s used to advise the landfill of where in the facility the waste may be placed. A WAC test is usually accompanied by other tests which are carried out on the solid portion of the sample.

Waste Classification Reporting
ACS offers a complete hazardous waste classification service that meets Environment Agency WM3ver 1.2, alongside analytical and laboratory services.
The service provides a report on each tested parameter. It indicates if those parameters exceed the set limits. These limits determine if the sample is dangerous or not.
To ensure the safe classification of waste, it’s vital that testers know as much as possible about the site / sample.
This information should contain the following:
- Details of the site
- Historical uses of the site
- Any known parameters
- Safety data sheets (if available)
Providing this information ensures that the correct parameters are used for testing. It also ensures that the parameters are classified correctly according to the WM3.1 requirement.
Please note that we can also use third-party laboratory data to carry out this work.
The following parameters are tested from the solid material:
- Total Organic Carbon
- Loss on Ignition
- BTEX (Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene & Xylene)
- PCB (Polychlorinated Biphenyls) (7 x congeners)
- Mineral Oil (TPH) (Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons)
- Total PAH (Polyaromatic Hydrocarbons)
- pH
Eluate Analysis – The following parameters are tested from the laboratory-prepared leachate:
- pH
- Conductivity
- Metals
- Anions
- Total Dissolved Solids
- Phenol Index
- Dissolved Organic Carbon
Deviating Samples
ACS strictly complies with the requirements necessary to meet the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) Policy on Deviating Samples (TPS 63).
In order to provide a high level of service to our clients, we provide free sample containers. This maintains sample integrity as much as possible after collection. The sample containers are selected specifically to ensure they are the most suitable for all our analyses.
Samples are defined as deviating when they do not meet specific criteria. In this instance, they may jeopardise the validity of the reported test result.
Examples of deviating samples include:
- Incorrect sample container
- Inappropriate storage temperature
- Incorrect or lack of preservatives used for time-critical parameters
- No time or date of sampling supplied
- Analysis performed outside of quoted stability holding times

Frequently Asked Questions
Is WAC testing mandatory?
The Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC) became mandatory in 2005 under the Landfill Regulations. WAC testing will analyse the leaching ability of contaminants in a material to identify how they are likely to act when in a landfill.
When do you need waste contamination testing?
Waste contamination testing, or WAC testing, is required following a waste classification test. The waste classification test will tell you what’s in the material (if it is hazardous or non-hazardous), and the WAC test will identify where it can go.
Who is responsible for WAC testing?
Landfill operators usually request a basic characterisation of any material being discarded, and it is the responsibility of business owners to ensure this is done correctly. First, you should attain your waste characterisation report, then organise WAC testing with a specialist company such as ACS to ensure your waste can be safely disposed of.

Bituminous Testing
ACS carries out testing on new bituminous binder material and testing on hardened material for physical and chemical properties. Before the 1980s, Tar (which can cause cancer) was used as a binder. ACS staff can check materials to see if Tar was used.

Concrete was the first service to be offered by ACS back in 1987. We now test fresh and hardened concrete using a variety of UKAS Accredited methods.
Mortar and Screed Testing
ACS can sample and test new and hardened mortar. Hardened mortar for mix proportions and constituents, new mortar for compressive and flexural strength.
Contamination and WAC Testing
At ACS, we provide a dependable chemical analysis service for waste soils and construction materials. We use different test solids and leaching procedures approved by the Environment Agency.
Chemical Testing
The ACS chemical laboratory was established in 2007. It complements the physical materials testing service provided by ACS by offering a range of chemical analytical services.
