PROJECT BACKGROUND
ACS were commissioned by one of our local authority clients to undertake site and laboratory analysis. This was in accordance with TRL611 to enable early highway design and Hydraulically Bound trial mix design works to commence.
PROJECT OBJECTIVES
The objective of the project was to establish why highway failures were occurring. Physical site testing on the carriageway was also required to measure its foundation strength. Sample asphalt materials for potential contamination testing. Subbase samples were also taken to enable in-situ stabilisation laboratory trial mixes to proceed.
Large 350mm diameter cores were drilled in preference to the traditional break out trial pits. This was due to speed of cutting and resulted in a higher quality of reinstatement. New site procedures were introduced to ensure safe lifting of these bulky core samples.
OUR ROLE
ACS were employed at the very early stage of this project. We managed road space bookings and traffic management along with management of third party contractors. This ensured that our “One Stop Shop” approach flowed through all site personnel which aided the smooth running of each scheme. Our UKAS accredited laboratories fulfilled all material testing requirements.
CHALLENGES
- Large 350mm diameter cores were drilled for speed which required new site procedures to ensure safe lifting on the cores.
- Work was undertaken on a small narrow road which required use of traffic management (arranged by ACS).
